The Perfect Morocco Surf Trip Itinerary

May 24, 2019

Morocco has some of the best surfing waves in all of Africa. Not only is Morocco home to Africa’s Longest Bay, located in Imsouane, but it practically has year round sunshine and awesome waves for any surfing level. We’ve created the perfect Morocco surf trip itinerary for your visit to Morocco. Whether you’re an advanced or beginner surfer, you can visit all of these towns and catch the waves according to your surf level.

Once you stop by Afer Surf Hostel in Imsouane, we’ll be so excited to meet you and welcome you into our home! So grab a vehicle, a board, and a buddy, and we’ll see you soon.

Rent a Car

Renting a car in Morocco is affordable, easy, and an efficient way of getting around the country. It’s easy to rent a car from any of the major airports in Casablanca, Marrakech, and Agadir. And once you’re out of any of the major cities, the winding roads will take you through gorgeous countryside landscapes, and you’ll get to see some parts of Morocco that you would otherwise miss out on if you were taking public transportation. Strap your surfboard to the roof and hit the road!

How to Spend the Day in Imsouane

Essaouira (2-3 days)

This is an awesome starting base for a surfing road trip in Morocco. Essaouira is also a popular spot for kite surfing and is well connected to other parts of Morocco. Enjoy the beautiful fort and landscape as well. You can also horseback ride on the beach when you want to take a break from surfing.

Imsouane (1-2 weeks)

Welcome to the home of Afer Surf Hostel and Africa’s Longest Bay! There are two surfing locations in Imsouane, the Bay and Cathedral Point. Both surf spots are perfect for any surf level, depending on what time of day you go. Once you arrive at Afer Surf Hostel, we’ll help you grab a wetsuit and a board and will find the time to head out into the surf with you! The guests that stay at our hostel go surfing daily; it’s the perfect sociable hostel to meet other surfers and grab a buddy to catch the waves with.

Many people prefer Imsouane to its neighbor, Taghazout, because it’s way more chilled out and less developed. It’s a bit of a gem that’s tucked away behind sand dunes. But of course, we’re biased!

Taghazout (1-2 weeks)

The waves at Taghazout itself are for more advanced surfers. Luckily, there are tons of surf schools that will take you to nearby beaches for more beginner waves. Taghazout has more choices than Imsouane in terms of cafes and shopping, and is more built up.

Tamraght (1 week)

This is a small Berber village on the coast. Many surfers head to Plage Imourane to catch some waves, and is another gorgeous coastal town in Morocco.

Agadir (2 days)

There’s no surfing in Agadir, but there is an airport! This is a good place to spend a day or two and unwind from your intense surfing trip before you fly out.

Did you enjoy the perfect Morocco surf trip itinerary? We’d love to meet you here at Afer Surf Hostel and spend some time adventuring around with you!

They’re shallow and perfect for sitting, once you get used to the cold! Enjoy watching the waves crash against the rocks, and if you’re brave, you can climb up to the top of the rock for an even better view. If you go at low tide, the pools are the perfect size.

Cliff Side Viewpoint

If you walk all the way down Africa’s Longest Bay and then up a long, steep staircase, you’ll come to a road along the cliff side with incredible views of the Bay. You can see the town next to us as well as all of Imsouane.

Cathedral Point Viewpoint

Walk past all of the restaurants and you’ll be on top of the cliff with an amazing view of Cathedral Point. You can walk on the sand dunes right along the cliff’s edge for spectacular photos of the ocean and the sand dunes.

March 28, 2019

The hostel is run be 2 open minded local Moroccans who are some of the kindest guys you will ever meet. This is what makes this hostel different from other hostels. AFER hostel started because the owners had a dream of opening a business that would allow them to meet travelers from all over the world. You will be treated with amazing hospitality and respect when you stay here, making your visit to Imsouane that much more memorable.

Breakfast at Afer Surf hostel in Imsouane

These are some of the tastiest meals that you will find in town and are priced at a very reasonable cost.  There is also a really good breakfast that can be purchased at a low cost and is worth buying.

The hostel itself is at a location that is very easy to find. It is located right off the main road once you enter into Imsouane village. Surf Imsouane a cozy fishing village

Surf Imsouane

If you have done your research, you may have seen that Morocco is a hotspot for surfing. The whole coastline of Morocco has some of the best surf in the world but is mainly known for having some of the longest right hand point breaks. People will fly from all over to come surf these waves and once you see it in person you will understand why.

Imsouane is a small, cozy fishing village located right in between the Agadir and Essaouira. This surf spot is known as “The Bay” and mainly ridden by longboarders. You can ride shortboards here, you just need a bigger swell, otherwise you may get a bit frustrated because it is a bit of a slower wave and can be tough to get a wave due to a large crowd. The wave offers a ride that can last 1-2 minutes long if you catch it out at the point. There are multiple nose riding sections and a big open face for you to do a handful of cutbacks and maneuvers on. There are a few things that are important to know before you come and surf here. After surfing this wave for a decent amount of time, these are pointers for you to keep you and everyone else safe in the water.

First off, when the swell is smaller the crowd can be quite massive. Since this wave has blown up, there has been a huge growth in surf tourism to this village. The wave can become pretty crowded but there are so many waves that come through that it is easy to still be able to get a lot of waves. If you are a beginner, it is very important to be mindful of other surfers of the other people in the water and understand some of the “rules” when it comes to taking off on a wave. If everyone understands the importance of this, then everyone can stay safe in the water.

Next, knowing the conditions of the surf is a major factor for this wave. The Bay is best surf on a low or mid tide. When it is high tide, the wave almost disappears and is not very good. When it is peak low tide the rip current is very strong, making it seemingly impossible to get out into the line up. The best way to get out is right by the break wall. When the current is strong, it will sweep you down the beach in minutes. If this happens, simply get out on the shore by the cliffs and walk back to the point. The Bay needs a Southwest or a North swell to break and is best around the 5- 10 ft. range.

When it comes to renting a surfboard, there are multiple places in Imsouane village to rent. You can find good quality short boards, longboards, and hybrids here and the boards are in great shape. They will cost anywhere from 80- 100 MAD for a day rental but you can sometimes make a deal if you rent for a longer period of time.

Finally, it is important to know that this is more of a rural surf spot and there are no Lifeguards here. If you are a beginner or are fairly new to surfing, make sure you know what your limits are and what you are capable of doing. The ocean is a very powerful place and there is not someone watching to get you out of trouble if you need help. If you feel like the waves are too big and are feeling more worried than excited, trust your gut feeling and take it easy.

We hope that this article is able to help you get a better perspective on what it is like to surf in Imsouane. Stay safe in the water and have fun surfing some on the longest waves in the world.
